OBAR Community Foundation – Making A Difference
Dear Members: Thank you so much for your continuing support of the Oakland/Berkeley Association of Realtors Community Foundation. We are launching our “Making A Difference” eNewsletter to present stories of how your contributions are impacting those who received a Community Foundation grant award this year. Thank you so much for your support. Community Foundation Committee.
Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAFG) just finished up two great weeks of summer camp, “Product Design Using Coding, Craft and Engineering.” Thank you to the Oakland Berkeley Association for Realtors (OBAR) for providing eight scholarships for girls to attend the camps. During the camp, girls in K-5th were given different product design challenges. The 3-5th grade girls designed projects and then converted them to a digital project using code (Scratch). The K-2 girls designed and engineered projects using craft. During the first week of camp, software engineers and product designers volunteered in the class and were on hand to help the girls trouble shoot. We also had a variety of female STEM role models visit the girls over the two weeks to inspire them with what they do and show them that STEM is a field they can see themselves in. Twenty-eight girls participated in the two camps from kindergarten through fifth grade, from 9-3pm each day. The girls were very proud of their finished products and had the opportunity to share them with everyone at the end of the week and talk about their designs.
SAFG, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, provides after school and summer STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs to young children with a special focus on girls and underserved youth. SAFG’s goals are to increase positive attitudes toward STEM in K-5th grade female students and to increase hands-on learning opportunities for girls everywhere to explore STEM concepts and encourage lifelong learning of STEM subjects.
Thank you again to OBAR for supporting girls in its community to be our future scientists!!! For more information, please contact Courtenay Carr Heuer, Co-Founder, Scientific Adventures for Girls, www.scientificadventures.org, “Making science fun and accessible to all young girls”
